Barcelona have moved closer to securing Joao Cancelo on a permanent deal worth approximately €10 million, with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal reportedly granting clearance for the Portuguese defender's departure. Cancelo, who joined Al-Hilal on loan from Manchester City last January, has made 31 appearances for the Saudi Pro League champions whilst maintaining his status as a regular for Portugal, for whom he has earned 65 caps and featured prominently during their 2022 World Cup campaign.

The move represents a significant recruitment drive for Barcelona as they strengthen their defensive options under sporting director Deco. Cancelo's versatility—capable of operating as a left-back, right-back, and wing-back—addresses a persistent weakness that contributed to Barcelona's defensive frailties last season, when they conceded 50 goals in La Liga. The fee of €10 million represents a substantial discount from his market value, comparable to Barcelona's previous shrewd acquisitions of experienced players during their financial reconstruction phase.

If formalised, Cancelo's arrival would give Barcelona additional depth in a critical area before the second half of the season, with the club currently holding third place in La Liga. The 30-year-old's experience across multiple European clubs—including Juventus, where he made over 100 appearances—provides immediate leadership qualities for Hansi Flick's squad as they pursue Champions League qualification and domestic silverware during the remaining campaign months.
