Cristian Romero is edging closer to a move away from Tottenham Hotspur, with Atlético Madrid advancing their pursuit of the Argentine defender. The 26-year-old centre-back joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 for £42 million and has since established himself as a cornerstone of Antonio Conte's defensive system, making 114 appearances across all competitions for the north London club.
The transfer represents a significant opportunity for Atlético to strengthen their backline ahead of their La Liga title challenge, where Diego Simeone's side currently compete for European qualification. Romero's physical prowess, aerial dominance, and one-on-one defending have made him a valuable asset in the Premier League, where he has kept 18 clean sheets in 64 league appearances. His potential departure would represent a substantial loss for Tottenham, who finished eighth last season and are rebuilding their squad for a push towards the top four.
Negotiations between the two clubs are now at an advanced stage, with a resolution expected in the coming weeks. Should the deal materialise, Romero would join a strong defensive contingent at the Wanda Metropolitano, whilst Spurs would need to accelerate their search for a replacement centre-back. The 26-year-old made 37 appearances last season and remains in his prime years, making the move strategically important for Atlético's ambitions both domestically and in European competition.
