Brighton pulled off a sensational Carabao Cup upset at Old Trafford, staging a remarkable late comeback to defeat Manchester United 3-2 in a thrilling third-round encounter. Trailing by two goals heading into the final twenty minutes, the visitors completely shifted the momentum of the game through relentless tactical pressing and clinical finishing. Manager Roberto De Zerbi watched his side orchestrate this stunning turnaround against the twenty-time English league champions, who had initially taken control thanks to first-half goals from their marquee summer signings. This dramatic victory adds another memorable chapter to Brighton's impressive modern domestic cup history, continually proving their ability to outclass established traditional giants on English football's biggest stages.
The fixture showcased the stark contrast between Brighton's fearless tactical approach and Manchester United's ongoing defensive vulnerabilities under Erik ten Hag during a demanding autumn schedule. Despite dominating possession early on and creating numerous high-value chances, the Red Devils repeatedly failed to put the game beyond reach, missing crucial opportunities through Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. Brighton capitalized on these glaring defensive lapses when substitute Evan Ferguson sparked the comeback with a powerful header in the seventy-second minute, followed shortly by a brilliant equalizer from Kaoru Mitoma. Statistics heavily favored Manchester United in total shots, but Brighton's ruthless efficiency inside the penalty box ultimately decided this high-stakes elimination tie.
Following this unforgettable cup triumph, Brighton advance to the fourth round of the League Cup with renewed momentum, eyeing a deep tournament run that could rival their memorable FA Cup semifinal appearance from the previous season. The Seagulls will quickly shift their attention back to the Premier League campaign, where they continue fighting for crucial European qualification spots against elite domestic opposition. Meanwhile, Manchester United face intense scrutiny from pundits and supporters alike, needing an immediate response in their upcoming league fixture to salvage confidence. Ten Hag must urgently address his squad's recurring fragility when defending set-pieces and holding late leads if the club hopes to secure silverware before the current campaign concludes.
