Liverpool club legend Jamie Carragher has voiced sharp public criticism regarding Florian Wirtz, arguing that the club record signing has failed to justify his massive price tag since arriving at Anfield. The Germany international playmaker secured a marquee transfer from Bayer Leverkusen last summer for a reported fee exceeding one hundred million pounds, generating immense excitement across the English Premier League. However, the talented attacking midfielder has struggled to replicate the breathtaking creative form that previously drove Die Werkself to an historic undefeated Bundesliga championship under manager Xabi Alonso during the unforgettable 2023-24 domestic campaign.
Carragher highlighted a troubling disconnect between the high-tempo demands of Arne Slot’s tactical system and the twenty-two-year-old's current output on the pitch. Across his opening twenty-six appearances in all competitions, Wirtz has contributed just four goals and three assists, numbers that fall significantly short of expectations for a player wearing the iconic red shirt as a primary creator. Premier League defenses have frequently targeted his physical adaptation to English football, closing down space quickly and limiting the time he typically enjoys compared to his previous experiences in Germany's top flight.
Manager Arne Slot faces an increasingly urgent tactical dilemma as Liverpool battles to secure a top-four finish and advance deeper into the UEFA Champions League knockout stages. The Dutch tactician must decide whether to continue building his midfield around the struggling German star or make tactical adjustments that could temporarily bench the club record acquisition. As Liverpool prepares to face a demanding fixture schedule featuring crucial clashes against traditional rivals, Wirtz desperately needs an influential performance to silence his growing list of critics and prove his elite credentials.
