Manchester City continued their flawless start to the Women's Super League campaign by grinding out a hard-fought victory against Charlton. Gareth Taylor's side arrived at the fixture with high expectations, yet found stubborn resistance from a well-organised Charlton outfit that forced the title contenders to earn every margin.
The decisive breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute through defender Alex Greenwood. Stepping up to take a dead-ball situation within shooting range, Greenwood curled a precise free-kick past the defensive wall and out of the reach of the goalkeeper to break the deadlock. It proved to be the game's defining moment, underlining the England international's value as both a defensive anchor and a dead-ball specialist.
Securing victories while not operating at absolute fluency remains a hallmark of championship-winning sides, and this narrow triumph highlights Manchester City's ability to grind out results under pressure. Maintaining a 100 percent record in the early stages of the Women's Super League sets a strong psychological benchmark for the squad as they juggle domestic ambitions and the rigours of an increasingly competitive top-flight calendar.
For Charlton, despite the disappointment of leaving empty-handed, the defensive resilience shown against elite opposition provides a solid foundation to build upon for the remainder of the season. Limiting a potent Manchester City attack largely to set-piece damage demonstrates tactical discipline that will serve them well against mid-table rivals.
Manchester City now turn their attention to preserving their perfect momentum in the league standings, knowing that consistency through autumn fixtures often dictates May silverware. Taylor will demand greater attacking fluency in upcoming training sessions as sterner tests loom on the domestic horizon.
