Wales enter their opening WXV fixture against South Africa at Cape Town Stadium carrying the weight of a challenging run of form, yet historical precedent still firmly favors the European side. Head coach Ioan Cunningham has named a dynamic matchday squad featuring experienced captain Hannah Jones in the midfield, as the Welsh program looks to establish early momentum in the global tournament. Despite suffering a difficult Six Nations campaign earlier this year where victories proved hard to come by, the squad retains a strong core of British and Irish Lions alumni who understand the physical demands of tier-one international rugby union competition.
South Africa enter this crucial encounter riding a wave of growing confidence following productive summer Test series performances under head coach Louis Koen. The Springbok Women boast formidable athletic power in their forward pack, anchored by veteran prop Asithandwa Ntoyana and inspirational flanker Sibahleaxolo Sibiya, who consistently dominate the gain line in set-piece situations. Historically, Wales have won all five previous encounters against the South Africans, including a hard-fought 31-5 triumph during their 2023 WXV campaign in New Zealand, but the hosts have closed the tactical gap significantly over the past twelve months.
Victory in this tournament opener will prove vital for both nations as they chase crucial World Rugby ranking points ahead of the upcoming global showpiece. Following this high-stakes clash in Cape Town, Wales will prepare to face stiffer challenges against reigning continental champions, while South Africa target a historic milestone win to validate their rapid professional development. Discipline at the breakdown and tactical kicking from hand will ultimately dictate proceedings, making every single territorial gain crucial for the side that aspires to lift the prestigious WXV trophy.
