Al-Ahli Saudi FC manager Marino Pusic has openly identified the specific tactical qualities that transformed Mamelodi Sundowns into such a formidable opponent following their recent FIFA Intercontinental Cup encounter. Speaking after the fixture, the Al-Ahli coach addressed the complex challenges presented by the South African giants, whose distinct style and tactical organisation tested his side throughout the high-stakes global tournament match.
Mamelodi Sundowns arrive at these international fixtures carrying immense domestic dominance in the Premier Soccer League, alongside a reputation for sophisticated possession play that often unsettles continental and intercontinental rivals. Under longstanding organizational structures, the Tshwane-based club has cultivated a technical blueprint prioritizing fluid passing triangles and intense positional rotation, making them a uniquely difficult puzzle for visiting or neutral tacticians accustomed to more direct opposition.
For Al-Ahli, navigating this tactical examination highlights the increasing globalization and competitive depth of club football outside Europe's traditional borders. As the FIFA Intercontinental Cup progresses, matchups between Saudi Pro League heavyweights and continental champions like Sundowns offer vital benchmarks for tactical evolution, forcing managers like Pusic to constantly refine their defensive structures against non-traditional opponents.
