Spanish sports media outlets have delivered a surprisingly harsh verdict on Marc Cucurella just eight games into his high-profile career with Real Madrid, questioning whether the dynamic left-back truly fits the tactical demands of the reigning La Liga champions. Following his high-profile transfer from the Premier League this past summer, the Spanish international has struggled to replicate the tenacious defensive form and energetic attacking overlaps that previously made him a standout performer for Chelsea in English football.
The mounting criticism highlights the intense pressure associated with wearing the iconic white jersey at the Santiago Bernabéu, particularly under head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who demands absolute defensive discipline alongside creative output in domestic and European competitions. Critics in the Madrid sports press have specifically pointed toward defensive positioning lapses during recent league fixtures against stubborn low-block opponents, comparing his early struggles unfavorably to the legacy left by club legend Marcelo and current starter Ferland Mendy.
Despite the early turbulence, Cucurella retains the backing of the coaching staff as Los Blancos prepare for a grueling sequence of UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures and a crucial upcoming El Clásico showdown against arch-rivals Barcelona. With over thirty senior caps for the Spanish national team and extensive experience competing in both La Liga and the English Premier League, the resilient full-back possesses all the necessary technical qualities to silence his doubters and cement his place in the starting lineup.
